Aidan Thomson (Owner)

Chemistry Tutor (S1-S4), Maths Tutor (S1-U2), Physics Tutor (S1-S5)

Education

  • Aidan achieved 5As and 2Bs in his Highers and 4As in his Advanced Highers (Chemistry, Mechanics, Maths, Physics).
  • He graduated from UofE with a 2.1 in Chemical Engineering in 2017.

Hobbies and Interests

  • Aidan enjoys Mountain Climbing and playing Football.
  • In his time off, Aidan enjoys travelling and attending music festivals.

 

Experience

  • Aidan has 6 years tutoring experience in Edinburgh, teaching 200+ students during this time.
  • Aidan founded Caledonia Tutors in January 2018.

 

Ambitions

  • Aidan hopes to continue to grow Caledonia Tutors throughout Scotland.
  • He is also considering a Master’s  degree in Education.

 

Calum Heggan

Maths Tutor (P3-S4), Science Tutor (P3-P7)

Education

  • Calum achieved AAA in Higher Chemistry, Physics and Maths.
  • He is currently in his 5th year of studying Physics at UofE and is on track to achieve a 1st.

Hobbies and Interests

  • In his spare time Calum enjoys coding.

Experience

  • Calum currently tutors 4 students Maths per week.
  • Thesis: “Investigating Incommensurate Electride Phases of Group 5 Pseudo-Metals.”

 

Ambitions

  • Calum hopes to engage in biomedical informatics research with the eventual hope of contributing to the detection of neurodegenerative diseases.

Rachel Janse van Rensburg

Maths Tutor (S1-S6)

Education

  • Rachel achieved 5As and a B in her Highers and 4As in her Advanced Highers (Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Mechanics).
  • She is currently in his 1st year of studying Maths at UofE and is  achieving a 1st.

Hobbies and Interests

  • Rachel is on the university ice-hockey team and will be going to Nationals this year. 
  • She has recently started learning to code and volunteered at her first Hackathon last weekend.

Experience

  • Rachel currently tutors Higher and AH Maths to 5 students per week.
  • Classroom assistant in National 5 Maths class, and taught English as a 2nd language weeklyVolunteered at a college in Nepal tutoring Maths and Physics, developed novel teaching methods. 

Ambitions

  • Rachel is passionate about sustainability and hopes to use her maths degree to help communities develop economically with as minimal environmental impact as possible. 

Eleftherios Toramanidis

Maths Tutor (S1-S6)

Education

  • Eleftherios achieved 19.2/20 in his OIB (95% Physics)..
  • He is currently in his 1st year of studying Engineering with Honours Electronics and Computer Science at UofE (2.1).

Hobbies and Interests

  • Eleftherios is in the Edinburgh University Basketball 1st team.
  • He also regularly trains in Muay Thai in his spare time.

Experience

  • Eleftherios currently tutors 2 students Maths per week.
  • He is also a regular helper at peer support groups at university.

 

Ambitions

  • Eleftherios has never had a main goal in life. However he would say that he would like to achieve something important.
  • Above all, he aims to achieve happiness.

Matt Chouzouris

Maths Tutor (S1-S6), Physics Tutor (S1-S5), Statistics Tutor (S6)

Education

  • Matt achieved 19.6 in his OIB and AA* in Physics and Maths.
  • He is currently in 3rd year of Computational Physics at UofE with a 91% average for 2nd year (Direct entry).

Hobbies and Interests

  • Matt enjoys playing water polo and swimming. 
  • He is regularly involved in various National and International Physics competitions.

Experience

  • Matt currently tutors 4 students per week. (H Maths, Physics and AH Statistics).
  • 1st in PLANCKS UK National Preliminaries London, Silver International Physics competition. Swimming Teacher. Outreach Talks with EU Physics Outreach Team. 

Ambitions

  • Matt has always been interested in science, and his aspiration is to instill this fascination to others, while also helping the world become a better place through it.

Alexandru Hau

Maths Tutor (S1-S5), Physics Tutor (S1-S5)

Education

  • Alexandru achieved an average of 9.96/10 in his final year of school. (10/10 Maths. 10/10 Physics).
  • He is currently in his 2nd year of studying Physics at UofE with an average of 84%.

Hobbies and Interests

  • In his spare time enjoys both swimming and jogging.
  • He also enjoys reading, in particular Science, Fiction and History books. 

Experience

  • Alexandru currently tutors 4 students Nat 5 and H Maths and Physics.
  • Experience tutoring 1st Year University students Maths. Simulations department with EU Hyperloop Team.

 

Ambitions

  • Alexandru hopes to make the most out of his time at University.
  • When he graduates he hopes to be working in a Physics-related job that is a benefit to society.

Jack Charters

Biology Tutor (S1-S4), Maths Tutor (S1-S5)

Education

  • Jack achieved A*A*A in her A Levels (Maths, Biology, Chemistry).
  • He is currently in his 1st year of studying Mathematics and Biology at UofE.

Hobbies and Interests

  • Jack enjoys playing football and is a black belt in Judo.
  • In his spare time he likes to go to the cinema and listen to music (rap and rock).

Experience

  • Jack currently tutors 4 students Biology and Maths per week.
  • Worked with Syrian Reading Coaches, Maths Teaching Assistant at Consett Academy.

Ambitions

  • Jack hopes to one day be teaching in a secondary school.
  • He would love to visit every continent at each once and learn the piano.

Jacob Kemprud

  • Jacob achieved A*AA in his A Levels (Maths, Physics, Chemistry).
  • He is currently in his 3rd year of studying Physics at UofE with a 1st average (2nd year entry).

Hobbies and Interests

  • Jacob enjoys listening to and playing music.
  • He also has an interest in Theology and Philosophy.

Experience

  • Jacob currently tutors 4 students Maths and Physics per week.
  • Volunteer Maths Tutor Poole Grammar School, Maths Ambassador Perth Academy.

 

Ambitions

  • Jacob would like to pursue research into nuclear fusion and other methods of harnessing energy.
  • He hopes to become a godly man of virtue.

Joe Carstairs

Education

  • Joe achixeved AAAAAB in his Highers and AAB in his Advanced Highers.
  • Joe is studying Mathematics and Philosophy (2nd year) and is currently achieving a 1st.

Hobbies and Interests

  • Joe plays viola in 2 orchestras, and is grade 8 in both viola and piano.
  • He also enjoys some hobbyist computer programming in his spare time.

Experience

  • As a new tutor,  Joe is yet to start weeekly lessons with students.

 

Ambitions

  • One of his dream jobs would be working at the SQA designing course schedules and exam papers. He feels that parts of the SQA programme, especially in the humanities, are engineered to discourage meaningful learning and could be much better designed.


Hattie Lord

Maths Tutor (S1-S5)

Education

  • Hattie achieved A*AAA in her A Levels (Sociology, Maths, Physics, History).
  • She is currently in her 2nd year of studying Mathematical Physics at UofE with an 80+% average.

Hobbies and Interests

  • Hattie is an avid volunteer with science outreach programmes at local schools and within the Boys’ Brigade.
  • She also enjoys reading and sewing in her spare time.

Experience

  • Hattie currently tutors 4 students Nat 5 and Higher Maths per week.
  • Previous Maths tutoring experience, assistant Sci-FUN, Maths Classroom Helper South Nottinghamshire Academy.

 

Ambitions

  • Hattie hopes to further her coding skills, learning more computer languages.
  • In the future she hopes to specialise in this further, and is interested in working in the field of renewable energy.

Omar El Champasi

Maths Tutor (S1-S5), Physics Tutor (S1-S5)

Education

  • Omar achieved A*A*A in his A Levels (Maths, Further Maths, Physics).
  • He is currently in his 2nd year of studying Mathematical Physics at UofE and is achieving a 2.1.

Hobbies and Interests

  • Omar’s hobbies include playing chess, reading and swing dancing.
  • He also enjoys discovering new music and playing music (guitar).

Experience

  • Omar currently tutors 3 students Nat 5 and Higher Maths per week.
  • Previous experience tutoring Higher Maths, Lead Year 6 Maths lessons, Award for higher A Level Maths grade in Greece (100%).

 

Ambitions

  • Omar’s ambition is to one day become a maths teacher or to do mathematical research at a university.

Innis Thompson

Education

  • Innis achieved 5 As in his Highers and 2 As in his Advanced Highers (Maths and Physics).
  • He is currently in his 2nd year of studying Physics at UofE and is achieving a 1st.

Hobbies and Interests

  • Innis’ hobbies are hiking, climbing, with the Edinburgh University Mountaineering Club
  • He also plays classical guitar.

Experience

  • Innis currently tutors 5 students Maths per week.
  • Maths teacher in Zambia for 1 year with Project Trust, Music tutor (Guitar).

 

Ambitions

  • Innis has not set any long term ambitions but a job in the third sector appeals to him after his work with Project Trust.

Virginia Cangelosi

Maths Tutor (S1-S5)

Education

  • Virginia achieved A*A*A in her A Levels (Maths, Further Maths, Physics).
  • She is currently in her 2nd year of studying Electrical Engineering at UofE with grades of 90%+ in her Maths courses.

Hobbies and Interests

  • In her spare time Virginia enjoys playing piano and reading fiction.
  • She also enjoys exploring new Mathematical principles such as Fractals and Boolean algebra.

Experience

  • Virginia currently tutors 2 students Nat 5 Maths per week.
  • Huawei Seeds for the Future, UTC Aerospace Systems, Research Trainee at Waseda University & National Research Council.

 

Ambitions

  • A job in academia so she can teach students as well as do research or build new electrical products.
  • Virginia hopes to never stop learning.

Dora Hegedus

Education

  • Dora achieved AAA in her A Level equivalents (English, Maths, Physics).
  • She is currently in her 2nd year of studying Geophysics and Meteorology at UofE with an 85%+ average.
  • Class medal: Intro to Geophysics.

Hobbies and Interests

  • In her free time Dora likes to try new activities like salsa dancing and learning new languages.
  • She also enjoys having a relaxing evening with a book or a movie

Experience

  • Dora currently tutors 4 students Maths and Physics per week.
  • Tutor with The Elevator Project, independent Mathematics Tutor for 2 years, worked on Erasmum+ Project.

 

Ambitions

  • After graduating, she would like to combine travelling with scientific research in the fields of Meteorology and Geophysics.
